Trabant: A Glimpse into the History of East Germany's Iconic Car
The Trabant, an iconic symbol of East German engineering, has an interesting history that begins in Zwickau, where the first factory was located. The original prototype, named the PHO 500, was a significant success in its time, quickly leading to the development of the Type 600. However, it was the 601 series that became the most famous, including popular models like the Trabant Combi and Trabant Tunor (limousine).
Over 3.5 million Trabants were produced, largely due to their ease of maintenance. Despite their reputation for being noisy and polluting, the Trabant became incredibly popular, especially because it could handle long journeys if drivers carried enough spare parts. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, demand for these cars was so high that potential owners either needed good connections or had to endure a waiting list of up to a year.
